Polmostundrovskoye deposit

Polmostundrovskoye deposit

  • The Polmostundrovskoye lithium deposit is located on the territory of the Lovozero district of the Murmansk region, on the right bank of the Voronya River. It is confined to the Bezymyannaya mountain, adjacent to the southeast of the Polmos mountain (southeastern vein zone), and its northwestern wing comes out on the slopes of the Polmos mountain (northwestern vein zone).
  • The main rock-forming mineral and, accordingly, the main lithium mineral is spodumene.
  • The Polmos deposit consists of 5 quartz-albite-spodumene pegmatite veins with a thickness of 8-30 meters and a length of 0.5-1 km. The useful components in the ores of the deposit are Li, Be, Ta, Nb.
  • The confirmed volume of lithium oxide at this deposit is 350,000 tons.

ORE PROCESSING RATE (OPR) 500,000 tons/year + processing at the chemical and metallurgical plant and Halmek with an increase in production volume to 20,000 tons/year (in lithium carbonate equivalent) by 2026.

RESERVES BY DEGREE OF EXPLORATION

As of January 1, 2022, the Polmostundrovskoye lithium ore deposit accounts for the following balance sheet reserves of lithium oxide for open-pit mining (GKZ 1961 No. 3281):

Lithium oxide (Li2O)

  • Category B: Ore – 1,473,000 tons (content – 1.25%), Lithium oxide (Li2O) – 21,513 tons, ,
  • Category C1: Ore – 11,812,000 tons, Lithium oxide (Li2O) — 144,123 tons,
  • Category C2: Ore – 15,482,000 tons, Lithium oxide (Li2O) — 186,112 tons;

Tantalum pentoxide (Та2O5)

  • Category C2: Ore – 28,767,000 tons (content – 0.0039%), Tantalum pentoxide (Та2O5) — 1,120 tons;

Niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5)

  • Category C2: Ore – 28,767,000 tons (content – 0.0070%), Niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5) — 2,022 tons.

MINING AND GEOLOGICAL CONDITIONS

The Polmostundrovskoye deposit is located within the Voroninsky ore cluster.

  • Within the vein field of the Polmostundrovskoye deposit, the veins are concentrated in two areas: the northwestern one, confined to the Polmos mountain (24 veins), and the southeastern one – to the Uchastkovaya and Dalnaya elevations (36 veins).
  • The industrial veins are five, located mainly in the southeastern part of the deposit. The veins have been traced down the dip for 200-300 m. The flanks of the deposit are poorly explored.
  • Five pegmatite veins containing spodumene mineralization in quantities of industrial interest are staggered in relation to each other and form an ore zone (length 3 km, width 200 m), elongated in the northwestern direction and called the Polmostundrovskoye deposit.
  • The method of development of the deposit is open-pit. The depth of development is up to the horizon of absolute elevation +200 m (up to which the reserves of categories B+C1 were calculated). The maximum depth of mining for category C2 is the absolute elevation of 0 m.

The Polmostundrovskoye spodumene pegmatite deposit was discovered in 1952 and explored from 1954 to 1964.

The Polmostundrovskoye spodumene pegmatite deposit was discovered in 1952 and explored from 1954 to 1964.
